From keeping the lights off when you don’t need them, to using small–scale wind turbines, to using solar panels, to planting trees, there are many different ways to improve the environment. For example: having a garden that flourishes with plant life will not only create a wonderful, fragrant ambiance, but the oxygen you breathe will be much more pure than common, polluted air.

When you are in your garden you will be able to breathe a healthier kind of air, the fragrance of garden plant – life is not only refreshing to the senses, but also better air. You are under a sort of separation from the pollution in the air that virtually everyone faces day–to–day. If you have a garden you have a healthier outdoor place to relax and unwind than public parks. Believe it or not, even a small garden is a contribution to the condition of the air around us. Plants, as most people know, create oxygen. Therefore, the oxygen emitted from the plants in your garden will improve the air quality around you. Considering the amount of pollution we know fills the air around us, people do small things every day that with any luck, will add up all together to protect the environment.

It may seem like a small gesture towards the improvement of our environment, but nonetheless, a garden can be like the five dollars you pledge to a cancer research facility. In many such efforts (the environment, Leukemia, Diabetes, etc.) it does not seem like much to give is not much but when there are enough people pitching in it can make a world of difference. Some public parks have joined in the crusade (whether intentionally or not) by planting trees, installing elaborate landscaping, shrubs and other foliage, vines etc. There are great parks springing up in certain areas in access, improving the beauty and reducing the level of air pollution around it.

The earth matters. Our planet is in danger. Many of our world’s species are under threat of extinction. As people are becoming more aware of the current threats to our environment, more publications are emerging to update and inform readers of the latest environmental news and trends.

There is plenty of opportunity for freelance writers to write for publications that focus on environmental and conservation material. Here are some examples.

Forest Magazine
This publication is produced for people who care about our forests. It is published quarterly by the conservation group, Forest Service Employees for Environmental Ethics.

Alternatives
This is a quarterly journal dedicated to in-depth analysis of environmental issues, including ecological, social and economic dimensions. They invite feature articles, shorter reports, notes, interviews, resource guides, visual images related to article themes, cultural commentary and humor.

Conservationist Magazine
This is a non-profit magazine published bi-monthly by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. Typical topics include fishing, hunting, nature viewing, and outdoor recreation.

BBC Wildlife Magazine
This is a monthly magazine aimed at people with a keen interest in wildlife, conservation, and associated environmental issues. Seeks original ideas and in-depth, personal knowledge of the subject matter. Receives about 30 pitches a week, most of which are rejected. Read their guidelines on the web to improve your chances of success.

In addition to publications like those above that focus on the environment and related topics, you will also find that many other publications publish environmental material, including regional magazines and women’s publications. Here are a couple of examples:

Hawaii Magazine
A bimonthly regional travel publication. They use freelance writers on a wide variety of subjects, including travel stories, environmental sustainability, personality profiles, stories on history, culture, music, and food.

Herizons
This publication reflects a feminist philosophy that is diverse and relevant to women’s daily lives. They seek to empower women; to inspire hope and foster a state of wellness that enriches women’s lives. In-depth feature articles cover feminist debates, current social/ political/legal/environmental/culture emerging issues or personal stories with a broader social relevance.

It is time to care for our planet. It is time to start conserving. As a freelance writer you can contribute to this movement and grow your freelance writing business at the same time.

Agriculture is essential to reducing poverty, with a 34 percent share of GDP in low income countries. Three out of every four poor people in developing countries live in rural areas and 2.1 billion survive on less than $2 a day. Over 80 percent of the rural poor depend directly or indirectly on agriculture for their livelihoods.

Rural-urban income disparities are widening in rapidly growing countries – in East Asia the ratio of rural to urban poverty increased from about 2 to more than 3.5 between 1993 and 2002.

Livestock is one of the fastest growing subsectors of agriculture in developing countries. Production of meat has doubled over the last 15 years, led by a 7 percent annual increase in poultry. Vegetable production has grown by 7 percent annually over the past 15 years.

Aquaculture is the fastest growing agriculture sector. Global production has increased 9 percent per year since 1970 and the growth rate is as high as 25 percent annually in Brazil over the last 5 years.

Demand for food is expected to double by the year 2030, in addition to feed and bioenergy demand. Agriculture must increase its efficiency to meet that demand on less land and with less water. Furthermore, to reduce the stress on the environment, environmental services and innovative measures must be considered for long term sustainability.
